Wedding photographer in Provins

Provins is one of the few places in the Paris region where you can marry inside a genuine medieval town. The upper town has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2001: 12th-century ramparts, the Tour César, the Saint-Quiriace collegiate church, the tithe barn, cobbled lanes and terraced gardens. For a wedding report it is a setting that works on its own: the pale stone holds late-afternoon light, the ramparts open long perspectives, and the underground galleries and courtyards provide shelter when the weather turns. I travel from the Oise across the whole Paris region with no mileage fees.

The upper town is walkable. Between the Tour César, the Saint-Quiriace collegiate church and the Porte Saint-Jean, everything sits within a ten-minute walk: a full couple session without ever getting back in the car, which is rare and saves considerable time on the day.

Provins stone is pale and reflects a lot of light. In midsummer afternoons it flattens faces; late in the day it turns golden and works for you. Whenever the schedule allows I ask for fifteen minutes at sunset, that is when the images you frame get made.

The ramparts and terraced gardens give depth: place the couple far off with the town behind them and the image tells the place without needing a caption. That is the advantage of a fortified town over a château park, where one estate looks much like another.

Provins draws many visitors, especially at weekends and during the medieval festival. That is not a problem if you know where to go: inner courtyards, the upper gardens and the areas around the collegiate church empty out early in the morning and late in the day. I always scout locations before the day itself.

Many couples hold the ceremony in Provins then move to an estate in the Brie, twenty or thirty minutes away. It is the classic Seine-et-Marne pattern and it requires planning: I build the photo schedule around real travel times, not software estimates.

I work in natural light, without flash inside places of worship, with fast prime lenses. During ceremonies I stay back: what happens happens once, and my job is to take it without interrupting it.

Provins owes its upper town to the Champagne fairs: from the 12th to the 14th century it was one of Europe's wealthiest towns, which explains the scale of the ramparts and the density of civic monuments. UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, it is now one of the few intact medieval settings within ninety minutes of Paris.
