Le Perray-en-Yvelines sits at the edge of the Rambouillet forest, four kilometres from town and 47 from Paris. Its distinctive feature is the Étang du Perray, dug in 1685 to supply water to the gardens of Versailles: not a decorative pond but a working part of the royal hydraulic system, and still the finest open view around. The commune also keeps the 13th-century Saint-Éloi church, the Saint-Jacques cross listed in 1952 on the Compostela route, the Napoleon bridge and the Pourras pavilion. I travel from the Oise across the whole Paris region; travel is quoted up front.

The Étang du Perray is the reason to photograph here. Water of that size doubles evening light: the sky reflects and comes back up onto faces from below, softening everything without adding a thing. It is the only place around that gives you this naturally.

Le Perray station is on Transilien line N towards Paris-Montparnasse via Rambouillet. That matters more than people expect: when part of the guest list comes from Paris without a car, a venue served by rail changes the shape of the day, and often the length of the evening.

The Saint-Éloi church is a restored 13th-century building. Like all churches of that period it is narrow and dark: I work in available light, without flash, wide open, and scout beforehand to know where the little light there is comes from.

The Saint-Jacques cross, listed in 1952, marks the Compostela route through the village. It is a discreet landmark and a fine excuse for a photograph for couples attached to local history — the kind of detail a generic estate cannot offer.

The forest begins immediately to the south. When the sun is too high for the pond, the forest rides take over and give completely different images two minutes away by car. Alternating the two within the same hour is this village's real luxury.

The pond is a public site and the path around it is busy on Saturday afternoons, walkers and anglers included. That stops nothing, provided you know where to stand: the western bank empties first at the end of the day, and it is also the one that catches the light. Half an hour's shift is enough to have the water to yourselves.

The Étang du Perray was dug in 1685 as part of the network supplying water to the gardens of Versailles: the Perray and Essarts area served as an upstream reservoir, linked by channels to the Saint-Hubert pond and on to Versailles. The Château de Saint-Hubert, built here between 1755 and 1759 for Louis XV, was demolished in 1855; all that remains of the estate is the landscape of water and forest it once organised.
