Les Essarts-le-Roi holds a rare position: halfway between Versailles and Rambouillet, at the mouth of the Chevreuse valley, with a station on Transilien line N. For a wedding spread across several venues — town hall here, ceremony elsewhere, reception at an estate in the valley — it is a first-rate logistical base. The commune keeps the Saint-Corneille-et-Saint-Cyprien church, the Château de l'Artoire and the Layes chapel. I travel from the Oise across the whole Paris region; travel is quoted up front.

The Layes chapel is the most photogenic spot in the commune, and the least known. A small isolated chapel gives you something a large church never does: a scale where the couple stays the subject of the frame instead of being swallowed by the architecture. The commune has a hyperboloid water tower, a lattice concrete structure people either love or hate. It is the village landmark, visible from far off, and it lands in the frame of certain views. Better to discuss it beforehand: some couples want it in a photograph because they grew up with it, others would rather it were not there. Both are workable, but not from the same spot.

The name comes from the “essarts”, land cleared from the forest in the Middle Ages, and from the king who owned it: Les Essarts-le-Roi means the royal clearings at the edge of the Rambouillet massif. The commune now straddles the urban belt of the Yvelines and the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse regional park.
