Wedding photographer in Gambais

Gambais is a commune of 2,570 people on the north-western edge of the Rambouillet forest, 37 kilometres from Versailles. It has what many villages around here lack: a genuine wedding monument. The Château de Neuville, Henri III in style, built in the 16th century and listed in 1972, stands in a 110-hectare wooded estate with a 17th-century farm. The Saint-Aignan church, whose oldest parts go back to the 10th century, has been listed since 1946. The Vesgre runs through the commune. I travel from the Oise across the whole Paris region; travel is quoted up front.

The Château de Neuville is a listed monument, and that has practical consequences worth knowing in advance: shooting permissions, accessible areas and time slots are governed more strictly than at an ordinary private estate. I deal with that at the scouting stage, not on the morning of the wedding.

A 110-hectare wooded estate is above all a reserve of settings: rides, forest edges, clearings, the 17th-century farm. You can shoot an entire couple series without repeating a background once, which is exactly what smaller estates lack, where every photograph looks like the last.

The Henri III style gives brick-and-stone façades, very graphic, with strong vertical lines. They work well behind a group photograph, provided you step back far enough not to cut the composition — this is a building you photograph from a distance, not up close.

The Saint-Aignan church, listed since 1946, has 10th-century parts. Very old, therefore very dark: available light, wide open, never flash. I scout before the ceremony to find the two or three openings that matter.

Gambais is less than seven kilometres from Houdan station, which settles the question of guests arriving from Paris without a car. For a village this size, that is a real argument when choosing a venue.

An estate this size behaves differently with the seasons, and autumn here is underrated. In October the 110 hectares turn russet, the light stays low all day instead of for an hour, and there is nobody about. For an off-season wedding it is one of the few places in the Yvelines where a late date becomes an advantage rather than a compromise.
